The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced plans to hold presidential and vice-presidential debates ahead of the 2024 election in October.

There have been calls for a debate between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearers, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and John Mahama.

The proponents, particularly New Patriotic Party (NPP) members have said the debate would provide an opportunity for Ghanaians to listen to both candidates and make well-informed decisions.

But the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had earlier criticised IEA over a lack of engagement following an announcement to conduct the debate.

However, at a press conference on Wednesday, the IEA indicated that, it has begun engaging the various political parties to ensure their participation.

Distinguished fellow of the IEA and former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo reiterated that the debates will provide electorates with a clearer understanding of policies and offer a platform for candidates to be evaluated.

“The IEA envisages holding the encounters in September and the debates in October and November. We will announce the precise date, time and venues after conducting engagements with candidates and their political parties.

“We will also urge all to keep themselves updated on the IEA website at www.ieagh.org,” she announced.
